A theme that stuck out to me last week touched on being yourself. It got me thinking about this idea of how easy it is to emulate someone.
I can fall into this guru syndrome focused on doing things like the greats. It seems well and good, but if we lose a part of ourselves, it’s all pointless.
By no means do I think we shouldn’t take principles from those we admire. But, it’s when we attempt to copy people their work or personality that causes problems.
I love this quote:
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking.
-Steve Jobs
I try to focus on learning principles and ideas rather than emulating the person sharing.
